Niccolò Paganini (1782-1840), a world-famous violin virtuoso and composer, used guitar as a solo instrument (eg 37 Sonatas probably of 1803-1823, mostly in two movements) and in chamber-music combinations (eg Grand Sonata a Chittarra Sola Con´Accompagnamento di Violino of around 1803 in three movements). The guitar transcription of No. 6 from the 24 Caprices for solo violin is a bonbon en plus.
Josef Mazan (b. 1974) studied guitar playing with Prof. Milan Zelenka at the Musical Faculty of the Academy of Arts in Prague. He has performed in solo recitals in Germany, Lithuania, France, Singapore and Poland. Playing exclusively from memory, he recorded this collection of works by Paganini on a Callaert guitar.
